Tales From Raising Two Girls

Shutter Island (Spoilers)

If you’ve seen this movie, explain something to me. Is he crazy or is he sane?

Here’s my theory…..

I think that he is sane and they convince him that he is insane. They know he was asking questions about their facility so they bring him there to shut him up.

The only problem I have is that there are things all along that do lead you to believe he is insane. When he sees his wife holding the whiskey bottle and she turns around, her back is burnt. When they do a front shot of her, she is bleeding from the stomach which is where he supposedly shot her when he killed her.The little girl he keeps seeing ends up supposedly being his daughter. Also….where did they get his suit with the tie his wife gave him? If he is crazy and he was sent there, presumably they would not have sent his good clothing to a mental facility.

If they are practicing mind control experiments there, like he thinks they are, it is entirely possible that he is made to think he is crazy, even though he isn’t.

What do you think?!

He’s crazy. They stage the whole thing because for the past 2 years that he’s been in the institution, that’s what he’s been telling them is going on.

So they stage this whole crazy intervention (for lack of a better word) to bring him back to sanity. If they can’t, they will lobotomize him.

At the end, he finally comes to terms with what happened. His wife set their apartment on fire, they moved to the lake house, and she drowned the kids. He WAS Andrew Laeddis. There was no Teddy Daniels or Rachel Solando. He made them up.

At the very end, when Dr. Sheehan (Mark Ruffalo) sits next to him on the stairs and asks, “So what’s next boss?” Andrew says, “We’ve gotta get off this island, Chuck” You think that he went back to going crazy, so Dr. Sheehan shakes his head at the other doctors to let him know he went back to being crazy.

Right after that, Andrew says, “I’ve been thinking. Is it better to live as a monster or die a good man?” There you realize he hasn’t gone back to being crazy. He just wants to be lobotomized so he can “let go” and not remember all the horrible things that happened.

At least that’s how I saw it.

That was my understanding as well (what Jocelyn said). The only thing I interpreted slightly differently was at the end – I though he “faked” being insane so he could get lobotomized at least partly because he thought he deserved the punishment, once he realized what he had done.
